Why Won't My Garage Door Close? 7 Common Causes (and How to Fix Them)

A garage door that won't close is more than an annoyance — it's a security and safety risk. Before you call anyone, here are the seven most common reasons, starting with the ones you can often fix yourself.
1. Misaligned safety sensors
This is the number one cause. Two small sensors near the bottom of each track must "see" each other. If one is bumped out of alignment, the door refuses to close (and the opener lights often blink). Gently realign them until both LEDs are steady.
2. Dirty or blocked sensors
Spider webs, dust, or a stray object in the sensor's line of sight will stop the door. Wipe the lenses clean and clear anything between them.
3. Something in the door's path
The door's auto-reverse will stop it if it detects an obstruction on the floor — a trash can, a tool, even a small toy. Clear the threshold.
4. Limit settings are off
The opener has travel limits that tell it how far to move. If they're set wrong, the door may reverse before closing. This adjustment is on the opener motor, but get it wrong and the door can slam — so call a pro if you're unsure.
5. A broken spring
If the door is too heavy for the opener because a spring has failed, it won't close properly. You may see a gap in the spring coil. Don't force it — this needs a technician.
6. Frayed or broken cables
The lift cables on either side of the door can snap or come off the drum, throwing the door off balance. This is a repair, not a DIY fix.
7. Worn or damaged rollers and tracks
Bent tracks or seized rollers cause the door to bind and stop. If the door looks crooked, stop using it to avoid further damage.
