It always happens at the worst time — you're late for work, or home late at night, and the garage door won't budge. Here's how to handle it safely.
First, check the simple stuff
Is the opener getting power? Check that it's plugged in and the breaker hasn't tripped.
Try the wall button and the remote. If the wall button works but the remote doesn't, it's likely a dead remote battery.
Look for a blinking opener light, which often points to a sensor or lock-mode issue.
If you hear the motor but the door doesn't move
The opener may have disconnected from the door, or a spring or cable may have failed. Look up at the spring above the door — a visible gap in the coil means it's broken.
How to open a door with a broken spring (carefully)
The door will be very heavy because the spring normally counterbalances its weight. Don't try to muscle it alone:
Pull the emergency release cord (the red handle) to disconnect the opener.
With a helper, lift the door evenly from the bottom. If it won't stay up or feels dangerously heavy, stop.
Leave it down and call a professional — operating a door with a broken spring can damage it further or cause injury.
What NOT to do
Don't force the door up or down repeatedly.
Don't try to replace a torsion spring yourself.
Don't keep running the opener if the door is jammed — you can burn out the motor.
